As stated by the ARBA, Holland Lops are the smallest ARBA recognized lop breed, weighing in at only 2-4 lbs. It's hard to say whether it's their sweet chunky face, wide short body, loving disposition, or overall cuteness, but there is something about Hollands that makes your heart melt. Like so many others that have fallen for the breed, I fell in love at first sight.
I had several rabbits before owning Hollands, but after having them, I'll never go back! Hollands are overall the most affectionate and loving breed I've ever met, and on the whole they are just like little puppy dogs...they just love all kinds of attention! So it's no surprise that our one or two pets have turned into a small herd of breeding and show rabbits.
In the past, I have been involved exclusively in 4-H showing at our local county fair. Since the "rabbit thing" is new to our family (no one's ever raised rabbits before!) we have very slowly been getting aquainted with the show world. I really enjoyed 4-H and have been showing my rabbits there for about 7 years, but now that I've graduated high school, I'm too old to show there since unfortunately our fair does not include an Open show. So, I've turned over my 4-H experiences to my younger brother and sister, and here starts my adventures in the ARBA.
After starting with the Hollands, I set several goals for my herd. The first is to breed for exceptional temperament. I have witnessed too many 4-H kids hauling around rabbits that are jumping, struggling, and trying to get away. They're skittish and scared and just don't make fun pets. That's enough to turn anyone away from rabbits! So from day one, our kits are handled and played with daily to ensure an exceptional and loving personality. Of the feedback I have recieved, the reoccuring theme is the awesome personalities that our Hollands possess. Goal one: accomplished.
The second goal I had for my herd was outstanding type. I have chosen Hollands that I believe will establish a solid herd for me, and I'm looking forward to our litters this spring. Even with the limited amount of rabbits I can keep during my college years, I've found rabbits that carry all the necessary components to a very competitive herd, we just need to get those all on one rabbit! This goal is easier said than done, but at least the first step to success is done.
That being said, I hope that you'll come back to our site often and see how we're doing and the progress we've made. I'm looking forward to meeting other Holland breeders at the shows, so feel free to stop and say hi if you see me!

Hoppy trails,
Julie
